Atwal named Canada West first star of the week

In the aftermath of a dominant performance at the conference championships, University of the Fraser Valley wrestler Amarvir Atwal was recognized Tuesday as the Canada West men's first star of the week.

It was a weekend to remember for the sophomore from Surrey, B.C., who won gold at the Canada West championships in Calgary in the men's 76 kilogram weight class. Atwal did so in spectacular fashion, pinning reigning CW champ Miles Kent of the Alberta Golden Bears in his final match of the round robin tourney to secure a perfect 3-0 record.

Atwal was subsequently voted the CW wrestling male athlete of the year, becoming the second Cascade to win the award, following in the footsteps of last year's winner Brad Hildenbrandt.

The men's second and third stars of the week, respectively, were Nimo Benne (Thompson Rivers volleyball) and Jadon Cohee (UBC basketball). Atwal now moves forward as the CW nominee for the U SPORTS men's athlete of the week award.
The next action for Atwal and his Cascades teammates comes Feb. 21-22 at the U SPORTS national championships, hosted by Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont.
