THE TOURNAMENT
The Cascades women's rugby sevens club is off to UBC's Thunderbird Stadium this weekend for the final tournament of the Canada West Women's Sevens Series.
The youthful UFV roster
made its season debut two weeks ago in Victoria, finishing in eighth place overall. The Victoria Vikes are the CW Sevens Series frontrunners, having won both tournaments to date.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Hannah Bilmer, UFV – Bilmer's journey to the Cascades is unique – the kinesiology student served as the club's athletic therapist last year, and has joined the squad in 2021-22 as a newcomer to the sport. Bilmer is a natural athlete with a soccer background, and she's made a strong transition to her new sport and scored her first try two weeks ago at UVic.
QUOTABLE
"Knowing going in that we hadn't gone to the Edmonton tournament (CW Sevens Series Tourney #1), and all the other teams had a chance to get into it, and going in with lower numbers, we knew it was going to be a tough tournament in Victoria. But I think it went well in terms of our team aspect. It was good to grow together as a team. After every single game, we'd come together in the changeroom, and every person would speak. Some people gave constructive criticism, and others gave encouragement. We all kept giving input, so we knew what we were thinking as a group after each game."
– Cascades women's rugby sophomore Kira Katan, on what her team took away from the UVic tournament
"I'm looking forward to seeing everyone try something new on the field. We're going in with a little more confidence, knowing what we want to do and setting little goals for this next tournament that are realistic."
– Katan, on how her team can continue to grow at the UBC event this weekend
