WBB: Gobeil scores 31 as Cascades defeat Vikes in home opener

Abbotsford, BC – Maddy Gobeil scored a game-high 31 points as the UFV Cascades picked up an 89-65 victory over the University of Victoria Vikes on Friday at the UFV Athletic Centre. The home opening victory moves the Cascades to 3-0 on the season, while the Vikes drop to 0-3.

As it happened:
The Cascades got off to a great start, opening the game on a 13-3 run. Gobeil scored 11 in the opening frame, as UFV took a 28-15 lead.

A Nikki Cabuco three gave the Cascades a 24-point advantage just over halfway through the second quarter. Victoria cut that lead to just 16 with a Makena Anderson triple just before halftime, but UFV's Marijke Duralia answered with a three of her own at the buzzer to keep it a 19-point spread.

The Vikes went to work early in the third, and an Abigail Becker jumper cut the deficit to 12, but the Cascades turned it on to outscore Victoria 25-10 in the final 4:16 of the period.

The Cascades slowed the game down in the fourth and, despite being outscored 13-10, they cruised to the 89-65 win.

Top performers:
Maddy Gobeil led all scorers with 31 points and added seven rebounds for UFV. Nikki Cabuco added 11 points, and Marijke Duralia notched 10 points off the bench for the Cascades.

Abigail Becker scored a team-high 18 points and nine rebounds for the Vikes, while Sierra Resig and Makena Anderson each posted 12 points.

Quotable:
Cascades guard Maddy Gobeil

"It doesn't matter who is scoring for us. We have so many people that can be effective offensively, it's just like whose night is it going to be. If they take something away, we know we have a bunch of people that can do some damage."

"Obviously, UVIC is going to make some adjustments tonight, and the job isn't done yet. We're halfway through the weekend and have another game to focus on tomorrow. We just have to go back to what we know we can do and go from there."

Up next:
The Cascades host the Vikes again on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the UFV athletics Centre. Tickets can be purchased online at gocascades.ca/tickets, and the game can also be seen live on canadawest.tv.
