WBB: Cascades capture seventh straight win with late run past Cougars

Regina, SK – The UFV Cascades picked up a 79-72 win over the University of Regina Cougars to move to a perfect 7-0 record so far this season. Friday's result drops the Cougars to 2-3 this season.

As it happened:
UFV led for nearly the entire first half and by as many as eight points, but the Cougars clamped down defensively and didn't allow a field goal for the final five minutes of the second quarter. They scored 11 straight points in that time, a run capped by a Maddy Seida three-pointer at the buzzer which put the Cougars up 36-33 at the half.

A Kyu Fust triple, and an Eden Wells layup gave the Cougars five quick points in the third, before a jade Belmore jumper made it 47-39. A 9-1 run capped off by a Fania Taylor triple pulled the Cascades back, and the visitors took a 58-56 lead into the fourth.

The Cougars took a 70-67 lead early in the final frame, but with under 2:30 to go, Maddy Gobeil notched a three-pointer, and Julia Tuchscherer came up with a timely steal and bucket to give UFV a 72-70 lead. Deanna Tuchscherer added a basket to put the Cascades up four, and UFV was able to pull down three key offensive rebounds in the final minute and hit three free throws in the dying seconds to seal the win.

Top performers:
Julia Tuchscherer and Maddy Gobeil finished as UFV's leading scorers with 19 points and 18 points, respectively. Fania Taylor added 13 points in the winning effort.
Dayna Pearce led Regina (2-3) with 15 points while Belmore and Ryenn Schutz both scored 11. Schutz added 10 rebounds to notch her third double-double of the season.

Quotable:
UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer

"It was a pretty solid road game from us I thought. It was a pretty good crowd and an energized team in a close game, so those were all good experiences for us. We made some big plays down the stretch at both ends of the floor and got the job done."

Up next:
The two teams will finish off the weekend series on Saturday night in Regina. Tip-off is again scheduled for 4:00 PM PT.
