WBB: Leda scores career-high 18 points as Cascades cruise past TRU

Abbotsford, BC – Bernie Leda's career-best 18 points and seven rebound led the UFV Cascades to their second win of the weekend as they took down the TRU WolfPack 67-32 on Saturday afternoon at the UFV Athletic Centre.

Esther Allison picked up a game-high five blocks for the Cascades, while Maddy Gobeil tallied game-highs in points with 16 and rebounds with 15 to help lead the team to the win.

The win moves UFV to 9-3 on the season, while TRU falls to 0-12 in Canada West play.

How it happened:
The Cascades started fast in this one, getting six points from Julia Tuchscherer in the opening frame, while Leda added four of her own off the bench to help the hosts take an early 17-9 lead.

UFV continued to pour it on in the second with Leda hitting a pair of triples, as UFV outscored the WolfPack 18-2 in the quarter.

TRU found some footing after the break, hitting a pair of early three-pointers, but Maddy Gobeil closed out the third with seven straight points for UFV to push the lead to 33 before the team cruised to the victory in the fourth.

Notable:
Leda led the way with 18 points and seven boards, while Julia Tuchscherer had 13 points and eight rebounds, and Miah Schuurman added 10 points and six rebounds in the effort.

Quotable:
UFV guard Bernie Leda

"Tonight felt good. Coming off some injury and not a very good first half of the season for me, so it feels good to come in and play strong."

"I feel like in the first half of the season I was really in my own head, and a goal for me in the second half is to just play free. I feel like that is what brought me success last season, just having fun with it and it's good. A big focus for the team right now is to be positive, and bring positive energy, and when I play like myself and I'm having fun I naturally kind of bring in some more positivity."

"I'm more proud of the rebounds for sure. Al [Tuchscherer] has always said I'm not a rebounding guard, so I'm going to pull up this stat next time. It's probably the most I have ever had."

Up next:
The Cascades head on the road next week for a pair of games against the UBC Thunderbirds on January 17 and 18. The games can also be seen live on Canada West TV.
