WBB: Schuurman leads cascades to home opening win over Vikes

Abbotsford, BC – Miah Schuurman was all over the stat sheet for the UFV Cascades on Friday as the second-year player led her team to a 65-62 win over the Victoria Vikes in Saturday's home opener.

The Cascades move to 1-1 with the win, while Victoria drops to 0-2 after the first week of play.

How it happened:
With the teams tied up at nine early on, an eight-point UFV run was capped off by a Carmen Folka bucket under the rim to put UFV up 17-9 with 3:23 left in the opening frame. Victoria hit back with a run of their own ,that included four of Abigail Becker's seven first quarter points, to pull back within three at the break.

After the Cascades reestablished a 29-19 lead, a 17-4 Victoria run ended the half with the Vikes up by 3.

UFV came out strong in the third, retaking the lead on a Fania Taylor triple, to make it 46-45. A Kyanna Knodel bucket gave the Cascades an eight point lead in the fourth, but the Vikes would battle back one more time to cut the deficit to three at 63-60. After a UFV free throw, Victoria's Eden Henderson made a shot to cut the lead to two, but that would be as close as they would come with UFV closing it out on a Fania Taylor shot from the charity stripe.

Notable:
Schuurman led the way for the Cascades with 13 points, eight steals, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Taylor also notched 13 points for UFV in the contest, while Julia Tuchscherer had 12 points to go along with eight rebounds.

For Victoria it was Mimi Sigue leading the way with a game-high 16 points, while Natalie Allison had 13.

Quotable:
UFV second-year Miah Schuurman

"We didn't have the greatest game yesterday at UBC, so turning it around and getting the win against Victoria was great for us."

"I like to create a lot of offence off of my defence, and as a team collectively we want to get stops early and I think we did that really well."

Up Next:
The Cascades head on the road next weekend for a pair of matchups with their local rivals – the Trinity Western Spartans. Game times are set for 6pm on Friday and 4pm on Saturday in Langley.
