Abbotsford, BC – Â
Fania Taylor and
Julia Tuchscherer each had a team-high 11 points for the UFV Cascades, as they snatched a 52-48 victory over the TRU WolfPack at the UFV Athletic Centre.
The win is the Cascades' first on a Friday this season, as they improve to 4-6 on the year and push TRU down to 3-7.
How it happened:
With the game tied at 17 early in the second quarter the Cascades would score the next seven points, including five from
Miah Schuurman to take the first real lead of the game, and they would take that advantage into the half.
TRU would battle back just after the break, with Haley Merrigan, Sydney Vollrath and Morgan Eichenberger chipping in to cut the UFV lead to one. The teams would trade short runs through the rest of the third, but a pair of
Bernie Leda free throws were cancelled out by a Vollrath jumper to send this game to the fourth all tied up at 43.
The teams continued to go blow for blow throughout the fourth, but a Schuurman jumper with 1:27 on the clock would give the Cascades a four point advantage, and despite late chances at both ends the game would end without another score, 52-48.
Notable:
Tuchscherer finished with 11 points, four blocks, and eight rebounds, while Taylor also added 11 points, and
Bernie Leda chipped in nine points and seven assists.
Olena Vasylenko had a game-high 15 points for TRU, while Eichenberger had 10 points and eight rebounds.Â
TRU shot just 45 percent from the charity stripe, going 9-20 on the night compared to 10 of 14 from UFV. The Cascades finished the game with 22 points in the paint, while TRU only managed 12.Â
