WBB: Cascades complete weekend sweep of Trinity Western on senior night

UFV Cascades graduating players Maddy Gobeil, Nikki Cabuco, Deanna Tuchscherer, and Google Sidhu made the most of their final regular season home game on Saturday, as they helped their team complete a weekend sweep of their local rivals with a 54-40 win over the Trinity Western Spartans.

The win sees UFV finish the season with a 15-5 record, while TWU falls to 10-10 on the year.

How it happened:
Gobeil helped the Cascades out to a quick start on Saturday, as she scored eight of her team-leading 16 points in the opening quarter to give UFV a 15-11 lead going into the second frame.

After a TWU bucket, the Cascades went on a 10-0 run in the second. Gobeil and Cabuco kept the Cascades rolling, as they hit from beyond the arc and two late triples from Bernie Leda put the Cascades up by 13 at the break.

The teams traded points through the third and early fourth quarters, but after TWU cut the lead to 10 Leda and Cabuco struck from deep again to make it 52-34 for UFV. A Sydney Bradshaw jumper pulled TWU back within 14, but Sidhu returned the favour moments later to seal it with just over a minute remaining.

Notable:
The Cascades celebrated their four graduating players with a post-game ceremony following Saturday's win.

Gobeil finishes her regular season career with UFV as the women's basketball program's all-time leader in points per game at 15.4.

Now the Cascades look ahead to hosting the Canada West quarterfinals next Saturday at 3pm PT. They will meet the winner of the 12 seed University of Manitoba and the fifth seeded University of Calgary currently set to be played at 6pm PT at the UFV Athletic Centre. Ticketing information for both of those games will be released in the coming days.

Quotable:
"It's kind of a surreal feeling, having been here for six years, and playing our last regular season games. I said the other day, and I didn't want to jynx it, but every senior's game we've had since I have been here we have gotten a win on Saturday. I think that was just something that was important to us," Gobeil explained on the feeling of Saturday's game.

"I think it's just competing and being confident in who we are as a team, and how much we have grown together this season. I honestly think that any of the top six or seven in Canada West can compete with each other on any given night. It's just about preparing for that playoff mentality where everyone comes in with the hunger to get the win and move on and continue to play," Gobeil noted on the mentality going into playoffs.
