Abbotsford, BC – The UFV Cascades limited the UBC Thunderbirds offence, but found their own scoring hard to come by on Saturday as they fell in a defensive battle 51-36 on alumni night at the UFV Athletic Centre.
UBC improves to 12-4 with the win, while the Cascades fall to 8-9 in Canada West play this season.Â
How it happened:
Eight points in the opening frame from UBC's Olivia Weekes saw the visitors lead by as many as seven, but a layup was followed by a three pointer at the buzzer from UFV's
Esther Allison to pull the Cascades back within two going into the second.
After the teams traded shots for much of the second, Jaeli Ibbetson capped off a 9-1 UBC run to end the quarter and give the Thunderbirds a 27-17 lead at the break.
UBC would start the third the same way they left off the second with a 9-2 run, but UFV would hit back with threes from
Bernie Leda and
Charley Arnold to keep the game close. However, UBC's defence in the fourth quarter would shut the door to close out the game as they held UFV to just five points in the frame and finished off the 51-36 win.
Notable:
UFV's
Esther Allison had a team-high eight points in the game to go with four rebounds.
Julia Tuchscherer had seven points and four blocks, and
Bernie Leda had five points and five rebounds.
Olivia Weekes had a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds for UBC, while Sara Toneguzzi and Stella LaGrange had six points each.
