Abbotsford, BC – The UFV Cascades women's basketball team dropped a 77-48 decision to the UBC Thunderbirds in their home opener on Saturday at the UFV Athletic Centre.
The result sees both team's record move to 1-1 after their first week of Canada West play.
How it happened:
The teams were separated by just three points six minutes into the opening quarter, but it was the Thunderbirds that would finish the frame on a 12-2 run. UBC would continue to puh throughout the second, outscoring UFV 23-10 in the frame, while the Cascades struggled to find their footing offensively leaving the hosts trailing by 16 at the half.
UFV shot 0-12 from 3pt range, and just 22.2 % from the field in the opening half. Meanwhile UBC shot 55.6% from the field over the first two quarters.
The Cascades found a boost in the third, with much of their offence coming by committee, as they outscored UBC 17-10 in the frame. The deficit would be too much to overcome however, as UBC pulled away again in the fourth to take the win 77-48.

"It's early days, so we have a lot of room for growth, but so far I feel excited. I'm looking ahead to next weekend and seeing what we can do."
"I just keep a steady mindset. Not getting too high or too low about how much I can contribute. My teammates know me, so they set me up with things and they're diving and attacking and helping me play my best."
"We're really young. It's definitely different than having a bunch of seniors on our team, but it brings more excitement into the gym and more possibilities for new opportunities. It's a learning process."
Up Next:
The Cascades head to Langley and Kelowna next week as they take on the TWU Spartans and UBCO Heat on Thursday and Saturday respectively.
