WBB: Schuurman leads Cascades with 18 as third quarter blues sink UFV on Thursday

Langley, BC – Miah Schuurman's team-high 18 points helped it stay close, but a third quarter dry spell saw the UFV Cascades come up on the wrong side of a 70-62 scoreline on Thursday against the Trinity Western University Spartans at the Langley Events Centre.

The result puts UFV at 1-2 so far this season, while TWU stays undefeated at 3-0.

How it happened:
After allowing the first five points of the game, UFV would battle back to keep it close as the Cascades and Spartans matched each other almost shot for shot through the opening frame.

The trend would continue throughout the second quarter, with the teams tied until the dying seconds when a Myrlaine Shelvey bucket from beyond the arc gave the hosts a slim three-point advantage going into the break.

The halftime break seemed to be in the Spartan's favour, as they came out scoring the first three buckets of the second half. After a Jada Paquin triple for UFV cut the deficit back to six, three more quick buckets from TWU capped off the 12-3 run to start the half.

A Jocelyn Boyes basket at the end of the third would give UFV a bit of momentum as they trailed by 14 going into the fourth, and despite a valiant effort pulling the game back within six multiple times, the Spartans would hold on for the 70-62 victory.

Notable:
Schuurman led the way for UFV with 18 points, seven boards, and three steals, while Bernie Leda chipped in 15 points.

Cassidy Buchanan had 21 points for TWU, while Moriah Jansen had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

UFV struggled from beyond the arc, going just 3-19 at a rate of 15.8%, while TWU shot almost 30% on 9 of 30.

Up Next:
The Cascades will now head on the road to UBC Okanagan on Saturday, as they look to pull back to .500 on the season. Tip-off is set for 4pm PT in Kelowna.
