The Cascades women's basketball team and their weekend foe MacEwan have eerily similar offensive profiles at this early stage of the season. Both have struggled to score, averaging an identical 54.2 points per game, tied for 15th in Canada West. The Cascades' shooting percentages are better, whereas the Griffins' superior rebounding margin has allowed them some additional possessions.
UFV has been the sturdier defensive team to date, allowing 65.3 points per game (sixth in CW), but both teams will certainly be looking to get untracked offensively this weekend.
"I'm sure for both teams, every practice we're working on ways to become a little more effective offensively," Cascades head coach
Al Tuchscherer said. "For us, it's an ongoing project that hopefully we'll make some strides on this weekend."
Tuchscherer noted that the Griffins' size will test the Cascades.
"They start three kids over six feet, and have some six-footers coming off the bench," he observed. "That poses some challenges in how we're going to defend that, and how we're going to score against that."
Players to watch: Cascades fourth-year forward
Taylor Claggett poured in a career-high 30 points last Friday vs. Alberta, and she did it in record-breaking fashion. She went 20-for-24 from the free throw line, setting new Canada West marks for both makes and attempts. The two previous records were longstanding to say the least – they had endured for a combined 58 years. Claggett leads the Cascades in scoring and ranks 12th in CW at 16.7 points per game, to go with 6.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists. For the Griffins, fifth-year guard
Kayla Ivicak averaging just shy of a double-double (10.2 points, 9.0 rebounds).
