Claggett named Canada West third star of the week

In the wake of a pair of upset wins over then-first place UNBC, Taylor Claggett of the University of the Fraser Valley women's basketball squad has earned Canada West third star of the week honours.

The fourth-year forward from Mission, B.C. was outstanding as the Cascades swept the Timberwolves at the Envision Financial Athletic Centre.

UNBC was the lone remaining undefeated team in Canada West heading into the weekend, and held down the No. 10 spot in the U SPORTS national rankings. Moreover, they boasted the conference's top two scorers in Maria Mongomo and Vasiliki Louka. It was Claggett, though, who racked up game-high scoring totals both nights. On Friday, she poured in 28 points and stuffed the stat sheet with six rebounds, four assists and two steals in the Cascades' 72-66 win. On Saturday, she had a huge double-double (25 points, 11 boards) and added three assists and two blocks in a 74-71 triumph.

Claggett's outburst moved her into the top five in Canada West scoring at 19.3 points per game, and she's also 12th in the conference in rebounding (8.3 per game) and tied for 18th in assists (2.9 per game).

The victories allowed the Cascades women's hoopsters to level their record at 5-5. They wrap up their pre-Christmas schedule this weekend as they face the UBC Okanagan Heat on the road.

The Canada West women's first and second stars of the week were both swimmers: Kelsey Wog of the Manitoba Bisons, and Hoi Lam Karen Tam of the UBC Thunderbirds.
