The Cascades got into the win column last weekend, sweeping the UBC Okanagan Heat by decisive 20-plus-point margins both nights.
"We'd been practicing really hard for the past couple weeks, and especially after the Winnipeg weekend (two losses), we wanted to get in the gym and work on stuff," sophomore forward
Natalie Rathler said. "It brought us together as a team, both on the court and off the court. It paid off, and hopefully we can bring that into this coming weekend."
The UFV squad is back on home court this weekend to face a stiff test as the Lethbridge Pronghorns come to town.
The Pronghorns – ranked No. 4 in the Canada West preseason coaches' poll – are riding a five-game win streak, and their five victories are the most in Canada West. They boast a potent offence, with four players averaging double-digit scoring, and their 36.4 per cent shooting as a team from beyond the arc is third-best in the conference.
"We know they're a team that likes to drive and find middle penetration, so we're going to have to watch for that and make sure our defence is strong," Rathler noted.
Players to watch: Cascades rookie point guard
Maddy Gobeil is off to a solid start to her first Canada West campaign. The two-time AA provincial MVP from Kamloops, B.C. ranks second in team scoring, averaging 11.5 points per game, and she's shooting the ball very efficiently, highlighted by 46.7 per cent from three-point range. She'll have to contend with a strong Lethbridge backcourt this weekend, led by
Kacie Bosch. The fifth-year guard, who began her career stateside with the Gonzaga Bulldogs before returning to play for her hometown Pronghorns, is averaging 14.5 points with efficient shooting stats across the board, including 38.1 per cent from downtown.
