Cascades' Godinez Gonzalez, Hildenbrandt win Canada West weekly awards

University of the Fraser Valley wrestlers Ana Godinez Gonzalez and Brad Hildenbrandt have been honoured by the Canada West conference for their outstanding performances at the U SPORTS national championships on the weekend.

Godinez Gonzalez is the Canada West women's first star of the week after turning in a historic performance on behalf of the Cascades.

The sophomore out of Surrey, B.C. laid waste to the competition in the women's 63 kg weight class, winning all four of her matches via tech fall on her way to the gold medal. She did not surrender a single point against, out-scoring her opponents by an aggregate total of 42-0 as she earned her first national crown.

Godinez Gonzalez's dominance was recognized at the All-Canadian awards banquet, as she was named the U SPORTS female athlete of the year. She becomes the first Cascades athlete across all sports – male or female – to win a U SPORTS athlete of the year award.

The CW women's second and third stars of the week, respectively, were Emily Overholt (UBC Thunderbirds, swimming) and Kelsey Wog (Manitoba Bisons, swimming).

Hildenbrandt is the men's third star of the week after completing his three-peat, winning a third consecutive national crown at the U SPORTS championships in Calgary.

The fourth-year Cascades wrestler, also from Surrey, continued his dominance over the heavyweight (120 kg) division, winning all three of his pool matches on Friday by tech fall without allowing a single point against.

Hildenbrandt faced more adversity in the final against Frederick Choquette of the Concordia Stingers. He raced out to a 7-0 lead, only to watch Choquette battle back to cut the deficit to 7-6 in the dying seconds of the second round. The reigning Canada West men's wrestler of the year hung on for the victory, though, to climb to the top step of the podium once again.

The CW men's first and second stars were Markus Thormeyer (UBC Thunderbirds, swimming) and Austin Cole (Alberta Golden Bears, track and field).
