Zacharuk, Perkovic spark Cascades past Western Washington

A moment of magic from Brittney Zacharuk lifted the University of the Fraser Valley women's soccer team past the Western Washington Vikings 1-0 in Bellingham on Friday evening.

Zacharuk, the Cascades' fifth-year captain, authored the lone goal of the exhibition contest in stunning fashion in the 30th minute. Simi Lehal played the ball out wide to Zacharuk, and she fended off a Vikings defender and unleashed a left-footed shot from just inside the box, into the far corner.

At the other end of the pitch, UFV sophomore keeper Andrea Perkovic sparkled, making six saves for the clean sheet.

Western Washington, ranked No. 11 in the NCAA Division II national preseason coaches' poll and favoured to finish atop the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this season, outshot the Cascades 14-4 but came up empty.

"Proud of our group tonight," Cascades head coach Rob Giesbrecht said. "WWU is a high-quality opponent and it took a committed and cohesive team effort to get a positive result. This is great prep for our Canada West season."

The Cascades continue preseason play Monday on the road vs. the Simon Fraser Clan (7 p.m., Burnaby).
