UFV Athletics & Campus Recreation measures to limit spread of COVID-19

The University of the Fraser Valley department of athletics and campus recreation, in alignment with directives issued by the federal and provincial governments, UFV, U SPORTS, Canada West, and provincial sport organizations, is taking the following measures to limit the spread of COVID-19.

FACILITIES

• As of 4 p.m. on Monday, March 16, all UFV gymnasiums and fitness facilities (Building E on the Abbotsford campus, Building Q on the Chilliwack campus) are closed until further notice.

VARSITY

• Cascades team practices are suspended until further notice.

• The UFV Spring Invitational, a tournament to be hosted by the Cascades men's and women's golf teams March 28-29 at Chilliwack Golf Club, has been cancelled.

• The Cascades soccer teams' remaining spring exhibition games have been cancelled, including the Keg Spring Cup (hosted by the Victoria Vikes, March 21-22).

• The status of the Cascades baseball club's season will be determined in a Canadian Collegiate Baseball League conference call on March 16. (UPDATE: The CCBC has announced it is cancelling the scheduled spring season. A plan to hold the season in the fall is being discussed. READ MORE).

• The annual Cascades Awards Banquet, scheduled for April 8, has been cancelled. Award finalists and winners will be announced via social media (release schedule here).

• Canada West has cancelled the in-person components of the conference's annual general meeting (May 4-7) and sports information meetings (June 7-10). Both will proceed digitally on dates to be determined.

• The U SPORTS Board of Directors has issued a three-week moratorium on all in-person recruiting in the 12 U SPORTS-sanctioned sports, effective immediately. This moratorium includes all in-person recruiting visits (on- or off-campus official or unofficial visits) as well as the scheduling and rescheduling of any future in-person recruiting; no travel arrangements can be made with prospective student-athletes during the moratorium. Recruitment by phone call, text message, social media, email, or other non-in-person mediums are permitted to continue during this blackout. This moratorium applies to the Cascades' basketball, soccer, volleyball and wrestling programs.

CAMPUS RECREATION, YOUTH CAMP & CLUB

• A youth rugby camp hosted by the UFV women's rugby sevens club, scheduled for March 15, was cancelled.

• UFV Campus Recreation's Active FUNdamentals spring break camp, scheduled for March 16-20, was cancelled.

• All UFV Campus Recreation fitness classes, intramurals, open gyms, and drop-in sport activities are cancelled until further notice.

• Junior Cascades volleyball and basketball programming is suspended until further notice.
