Kelowna, BC – A UBC Okanagan Heat goal from Ian Klumpen proved to be enough, as the Heat defeated the UFV Cascades 1-0 on Sunday in Kelowna.Â
The result pushes the Cascades to 2-8 on the season, while the crucial points boost the Heat to 3-5 and into fourth place in Canada West based on win percentage.
How it happened:
Both teams had chances in the first half, but it was Klumpen who would finally find the breakthrough in the 37
thminute. Zack MacInnes whipped in a corner kick that found the head of Klumpen in the box. The UBCO defender made no mistake placing his header to the left of Cascades' keeper
Jackson Cowx and into the back of the net.Â
The Cascades pressed to find an equalizer in the second half, outshooting the Heat 6-2 and forcing UBCO goalkeeper Ronan Woodroffe into four saves in the frame. Unfortunately for UFV, those chances would be a close as they would get as the final whistle ended the game 1-0. Â
Quotable:
UFV head coach Tom Lowndes
"Set pieces win and lose you games in Canada West, and those can alter your season for the good or the bad. I thought we deserved at least a point from the game, if not more, but we just have to keep on going. We can't go into our shell and feel sorry for ourselves. We have to keep on going and look to get results from every game that we play and see where we end up at the end of the season. We have been really unlucky with injuries, and playing depleted, We have had to play players out of position, and a lot of young guys have had to play a lot of minutes."
"It's a steep learning curve, and we have made some mistakes this year. We will learn from those and be better in the future, and obviously that doesn't help us right now, but we have to grow and take the experience from every game and get better. This group won't roll over, and we are going to keep going until the very last game of the season."
Up Next:
Next up for the Cascades is a home-and-home set with the Trinity Western Spartans next Friday and Sunday. Meanwhile, the Heat get ready to visit the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Friday and Saturday evening in Kamloops.
