WSOC: Cascades playoff hopes rest on Sunday’s match after loss to Vikes

Abbotsford, BC – The UFV Cascades women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to the University of Victoria Vikes on Friday evening at Rotary Stadium to set up a showdown on Sunday for the final Canada West playoff spot against the Mount Royal University Cougars.

The Cascades needed just a single point to lock up a playoff berth after MRU fell 5-0 to the Trinity Western Spartans earlier in the night, but three second half goals from the Vikes pushed the drama onto Sunday's regular season finale.

With the Cascades sitting on 18 points compared to MRU's 15, and having already defeated the Cougars 2-0 this season, UFV has a leg up going into the deciding match. UFV will need to avoid defeat by three goals or more to clinch the final spot based on head-to-head and overall goal differentials.

"Today we were hoping to get at least one point, but unfortunately we let in a set piece and lost focus after that," explained UFV head coach Ari Adams. "Realistically that's not a 3-0 game. We just didn't finish our chances or take our opportunities going forward."

Neither team managed many chances in the first half, but the game opened up a bit at the start of the second period. After chances were turned away at either end, including a highlight reel stop by UFV's Addison Chen, Victoria finally found the breakthrough in the 67th minute. Adrianna Hilton played in a dangerous corner kick, and Erin Jensen was the first to get a head on the ball to put it away.

Victoria doubled their lead in the 75th when Brianne McLeish drove into the box before placing a shot into the top right corner, just out of the reach of Chen.

The Vikes sealed it in stoppage time, when Isabella Paccani recieved pass from McLeish in the box and fired a low shot off the left post and in to make it 3-0.

Adams noted that the focus is now firmly on Sunday's important matchup with MRU.

"For Sunday's game everyone needs to show up and be focused to start playing how we started the season. At the start of the year, I would have been happy with making playoffs, but we had such a good start. We have sort of lost our momentum going forward and we need to get back on track Sunday."

The Cascades take on MRU to decide the final playoff position on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Rotary Stadium in Abbotsford. The game can also be streamed live on Canada West TV.
