The UFV Cascades men's soccer team got a pair of early goals, but saw a two goal lead evaporate in the second half, as the UNBC Timberwolves came away with a 3-2 win on Sunday in Prince George.
The Cascades came out flying early in this one. Five minutes into the match, UFV's
Kian Proctor forced a difficult leg save out of UNBC goalkeeper Daniel Zadravec to keep things scoreless. However, the Cascades broke through on the ensuing
Bhagvir Sidhu corner kick, as
Michael Beecroft converted on a header to stake the Cascades to a 1-0 lead. For Beecroft it marked his second goal of the season.
Â
20 minutes later, the Cascades doubled their lead when
Mateo Brazinha found an opening up the middle after receiving a pass from
Kian Proctor. Brazinha held a dribble until just outside the penalty area and then wired home his second of the CW season.
Â
The Timberwolves came out strong in the second half and were rewarded early. Connor Lewis raced down the right side of the pitch, before receiving a pass from Gregor Smith and his shot found its way past goalkeeper
Jackson Cowx to get UNBC on the board.
UNBC top scorer Michael Henman was assessed a red card and removed from the match in the 73
rd minute to drop the home side to 10-men, but just three minutes later the Timberwolves were awarded a penalty kick and Connor Lewis stepped up to score his second of the match to even the score at two apiece.Â
With only four minutes remaining in regulation time, Koss Nystedt got on the end of a cross from Wyatt Lyon, and the rookie defender directed it into the net to give UNBC a 3-2 lead.
Sebastian Insley had a great chance in the closing moments to bring the Cascades level, but his shot struck the crossbar.
"It was a tale of two halves," said UFV head coach
Tom Lowndes after the game. "I thought the first half was probably the best we've played all season, and we were a bit unlucky to only be two up, but we didn't take enough of our chances. In the second half we didn't do a good enough job of weathering the storm, and then the penalty has changed the game."
The Cascades return home next week to close out their season with matches against the University of Victoria at 7 p.m. on Friday, and UBC on Sunday at 7 p.m. Sunday's match will also include a pregame ceremony to celebrate a pair of graduating UFV players.Â
