MBB: Befus scores a game-high 27 points but Cascades fall to No. 2-ranked Vikes

Abbotsford, BC – Hans Befus scored 27 points off the bench for the UFV Cascades, but it was the U SPORTS No. 2 ranked University of Victoria Vikes that came away with a 92-76 victory on Friday at the UFV Athletic Centre. The win boosts the Vikes to 2-1 this season, while UFV drops to 1-2.

As it happened:
The Vikes took over early, as they had seven players put up points in the first to take a 26-9 lead.

The Cascades offence started to pick up in the second, but Victoria's Diego Maffia added 12 points in the frame to help extend their lead to 26 at the half.

After a tightly contested third quarter, the Cascades trailed by 28, but the momentum was swinging in the favour of the hosts. Hans Befus hit three consecutive triples in the fourth to cut the lead to 19 with six minutes remaining. Befus' 14 fourth quarter points helped the Cascades outscore the Vikes 30-18 in the final frame, but it was not enough to change the outcome as it ended 92-76.

Top performers:
Hans Befus scored 27 points in just 18 minutes off the bench for UFV to lead all scorers in the game. Dylan Kinley added 11 points and six rebounds, while Dario Lopez ended with 10 points and four boards.

Diego Maffia paced the Vikes with 26 points and five rebounds in the contest, while Elias Ralph was one board short of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Quotable:
Cascades head coach Joe Enevoldson

"I thought Befus played out of his mind tonight. He's an experienced guy in the league, and he hit some shots and got cooking. When he gets going, he really gets going, and he had a huge night tonight."

"I think it's positive moving forward obviously. We showed a lot of resilience. We could have folded and when the score got a little bit out of hand there, we showed some resolve. They are a top team in the country for a reason and they showed it in the first three quarters, but I thought we got better every quarter."

"They had 34 more shots than us on the night between free throws and field goals. We have to do a better job of minimizing that. For it to end up a 16 point game is really a testament to how we played, especially late, but at 34 you just aren't giving yourself a chance to be successful."

Up next:
The Cascades get set to host Vikes again on Saturday, with the game set to tip-off at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at gocascades.ca/tickets, and the game can also be seen live on canadawest.tv.
