WVB: Cascades pick up third straight three-set victory in win over MacEwan

Abbotsford, BC – Gabrielle and Lauren Attieh led the UFV Cascades with 11 kills apiece, as the team picked up their third straight three-set victory in a 25-17, 25-22, 25-17 win over the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday night at the UFV Athletic Centre.

With the win, UFV moves to 4-2 on the season, while the Griffins drop to 3-3.

As it happened:
After trading points for most of the opening set, the Cascades turned it on late to score nine of the last 12 points in the frame to take it 25-17.

UFV raced out to a 23-16 lead in the second, but a late rush from the Griffins that included three kills from Mariah Bereziuk cut their deficit to just two. However, kills from Gabrielle and Lauren Attieh helped the Cascades see it out 25-22.

The teams were level at six in the third, but the Cascades once again pulled away. UFV scored 10 of the next 11 points to nab a 16-7 lead that proved to be too much to overcome for the visitors as the Cascades closed out the match comfortably.

Top performers:
Lauren and Gabrielle Attieh's 11 kills led the way for UFV, while Natalie Lemoine-Sells added eight in the win. Libero Emily Matsui had a match-high 19 digs, and setter Cailin Bitter posted 24 assists.

Mariah Bereziuk led the Griffins with 13 kills, while Sarah McGee had 10. Bronwyn Ettinger had 17 digs, and Payton Shimoda had 27 assists for the visitors.

Quotable:
Cascades Setter Cailin Bitter

"We know from last year that sets won and sets against are very important, so we take it seriously and try to get it done as quick as possible because it can really help us later on in the season."

"I think we have found a really good balance between executing our skills ad having fun. When we find that balance, it's fun to play and we play our best. It's a setter's dream, these girls are so fun to set. I can trust them in any situation, and I love watching them get kills."

Up next:
The Cascades now have a week off, before heading to Calgary to face the Dinos on November 17 and 18. Both games can be seen live on Canada West TV.
