Abbotsford, BC – For the second night in a row, the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades fell in straight sets (17-25, 18-25, 19-25) to the UBC Okanagan Heat.
The Heat picked up where they left off the previous night, as they took the opening set by scoring 13 of the final 15 points. That strong play continued in the second as an eight-point run gave them an 11-5 lead that they would not relinquish. The cascades trailed 20-13 in the third, and a three-point run brought them within just four points of the Heat, but that was as close as they would come as UBCO closed it out 25-19 on a Renn Petryk kill.
Notable
The Cascades honoured graduating player
Noah Bouius in a ceremony prior to the game. The UFV middle picked up an injury on the previous night that kept him out of the action on Saturday, but still suited up to be a part of head coach
Nathan Bennett's starting lineup before being substituted.
Top performers
Jonas Van Huizen led the Cascades with five kills and three aces on the night, while
Ryan Hampe had five blocks, and setter
Max Paddock notched 20 assists and five digs.
For the second consecutive match Renn Petryk led the Heat in kills, as he notched 15 in this one. Lucas Woelders added 12 kills of his own, while Zach Van Geel had 28 assists and two aces.
Quotable
UFV middle Noah Bouius
"After getting injured yesterday I definitely felt it a bit more. I thought I had at least three games left to finalize my feelings, but I think after today it's a lot tougher because it just sort of ended and its just tough as an athlete to go through that."
"It's a pretty great feeling to have a group of guys that you can call brothers. Just being given that chance to stand on the court, even with my injury and coming off immediately, and have those guys come up to me and cheer me on, it meant a lot. I'm going to miss them, but that moment is definitely going to be sealed in my brain forever."
"No matter what the outcome is I will always cheer for these guys because it's a brotherhood. That's what it deserves to be, and I think going forward for these last two games we just have to fight for each other and those that can't fight just have to support the guys that can."
Where they sit
UFV sees their record drop to 4-18 with the loss, while the Heat improve to 6-14 on the campaign.
The Cascades now head on the road next Friday and Saturday to conclude the regular against the University of Manitoba Bisons.
