The UFV Cascades fell 5-0 in a rematch of last year's Canada West quarterfinal to the USPORTS No. 7 ranked Mount Royal University Cougars on Sunday.
How it Happened:
MRU striker Nikolas Meyer found the back of the net in the fifth minute with a header to give MRU an early 1-0 lead. This goal marked the German's first as a Cougar.
Just 13 minutes later Meyer assisted Josh Flaksman to double the lead, before getting another to extend MRU's lead to 3-0 in the first half.
David
Schaefer scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season with a left-footed strike from just inside the area in the second half, before Miguel Da Rocha sealed the game in the 70
th minute to make it 5-0.
Quotable:
UFV head coach Tom Lowndes
"We were too passive in the first half and there wasn't enough fight about us. We changed that in the second half and I thought we had a really good first 15 minutes of the half where we dominated, and they had one chance and they scored. That's what clinical teams do. They punish you in moments."
"The race for fourth is on now with 10 games to go. For us being a team that's in a transition year after graduating seven players last year and losing seven starters before this weekend to injury, I think the boys came in and worked hard and gave it their all. Unfortunately, the two teams we came up against No. 7 and No. 8 in the country and we battled them, but our injuries and at times our lack of experience has shown. We'll bounce back with two games at home next weekend and look to get back in the mix."
Where they sit:
The result boosts MRU to 6-1-0, while UFV falls to 1-5-0 this season.
The Cascades return home next weekend for a pair of matches against Lethbridge and MacEwan on Friday and Sunday. Both matches can be streamed live on Canada West TV.
