Calgary, AB - Kareena Sahota picked up her fourth consecutive clean sheet, and the fourth of her career, as the UFV Cascades played to a scoreless draw with the University of Calgary Dinos on Sunday afternoon.
The Cascades' fourth straight shutout matches the program record set in 2014 and tied in 2016 for games without conceding, while Sahota's 361 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal has set a new program record for an individual goalkeeper.
How it Happened:
The Dinos threatened off a corner in the 40
th minute, but a looping header from Sofia DiGiacomo was pushed away from Sahota reaching up to the top corner.
The Cascades best chance came just one minute later, as
Kiana Langston twisted and turned away from a pair of Calgary defenders before firing a shot to the bottom right corner, but Dinos goalie Katie French came up with the diving stop.
The Dinos had a chance late to end the shutout bid, but Sahota came up big. Calgary's Alison Pederson had a strike from 30 yards out, but Sahota was up to the task making a fingertip save to push the ball off the crossbar and out of play.
Quotable:
UFV head coach Ari Adams
"It wasn't the prettiest game. We knew we had a tough opponent and the players put their bodies on the line and did everything they could – blocking crosses, and shots – and everyone got stuck in and just battled."
"Kareena has been absolutely fantastic. She has grown as a player already in this short amount of time, and really become a leader. The entire team is just battling defensively like they have probably never done in their lives. It's not just the back line, it's our entire team defensive unit. It starts with Kareena, and she's been just top notch."
"It's been a journey this first half of the season with all the travel, but now we can really focus on our home field advantage, and not having to get on another plane. The players are pumped to be able to showcase their skills at home."
Where they sit:
With the result both teams move to 4-1-2 on the season. The Cascades finally return to the Fraser Valley for their home opener on September 22 against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, while Calgary heads on the road to face UBC Okanagan.
