WSOC: Telmer, Cascades rally to take down Cougars with late goal

Abbotsford, BC – Madison Telmer scored a stoppage time header, and despite trailing twice, the UFV Cascades women's soccer team rallied to defeat the University of Regina Cougars 3-2 on Sunday at Rotary Stadium.

The win moves the Cascades to 5-2-2 on the season, while the cougars fall to 1-3-4 in the campaign.

How it happened:
Although there were chances at either end, neither team was able to break the deadlock, and the two squads headed into the break all square.

The Cougars pounced in the 49th minute, as Jessica Chow fired a long-range effort that struck the crossbar before finding the back of the net to give Regina a lead.

The Cascades found an answer just 10 minutes later, as a fantastic ball forward from Simone Nagasaki found a streaking Kiana Langston, who calmly slotted the ball into the net past a diving goalkeeper.

Regina wasted no time re-taking the lead, as Allyson Schneider finished off the feed from Delaney Rhinehart to make it 2-1 in the 63rd. However, the Cascades found yet another equalizer in the 76th minute, as Telmer was credited with the goal after Dessa Peterson's corner kick forced a scramble in the box.

The Cougars looked to take a late lead after Peyton Enns' shot was only partially blocked by Cascades keeper Kareena Sahota. As the ball rolled toward the goal line, UFV captain Alanna Sydenham slid back to clear it away and keep the score 2-2.

UFV took over from there, creating multiple chances in stoppage time. As the teams entered the third minute of added time, Halle McCambley stepped up to take a corner kick, and Telmer made no mistake placing the header into the right corner of the goal to seal the victory.

Quotable:
UFV defender Alanna Sydenham
"We just really showed up in the second half. We had a good chat at half time and came in buzzing. When coming off a goal we just kept going up from there, so it worked in our favour especially at the end."

"Our dynamic just works. We all have each other's backs out there, and whoever is getting subbed on I know that they are going to get the job done. I think everyone on the field knows that, so it's a nice feeling."

Up Next:
The Cascades continue their homestand next weekend as they take on Thompson Rivers University next Friday, and UBC Okanagan on Sunday. Game times are set for 7pm and 1pm respectively, with both games available to watch live on Canada West TV.

Meanwhile the Cougars will play host to the Calgary Dinos and Lethbridge Pronghorns next week.
