MVB: Cascades fall to Wesmen in four to split weekend set

Abbotsford, BC – After a five-set win on Friday, the UFV Cascades fell in a four-set battle to the University of Winnipeg Wesmen (19-25, 25-22, 18-25, 20-25) on Saturday. With the result the Cascades move to 5-9 this season, while the Wesmen go to 9-7.

As it happened:
After trading early runs, the Wesmen built a 17-12 lead in the opening set, and although UFV would claw back to 18-16, a pair of kills from Nigel Nielsen gave Winnipeg some breathing room once again as they took it 25-19.

The teams battled back-and-forth in the second, but with the score level at 22 Eduardo Ferreira found a kill and a block for UFV to get them across the line and finish the set.

The teams once again kept it close in the third, but a pair of four-point runs from the Wesmen gave them a late lead, and four kills from Ethan Duncan down the stretch clinched the set for Winnipeg.

Each team found a large run early in the fourth, and once again there was not much to separate the teams. Winnipeg managed to eke out a two-point advantage at 21-9, before two kills and a block from Isaiah Olfert gave the Wesmen the final push to finish the match 25-20.

Top performers:
UFV's Nimo Benne and Jonas Van Huizen each led the team with 12 kills and two aces. Ryan Hampe had a team-leading six blocks, while Benne added five.

Nielsen and Olfert each had 17 kills for the Wesmen, while setter Alex Krykewich posted 46 assists and 11 digs in the match.

Quotable:
Cascades head coach Nathan Bennett

"They were a really good team tonight – Winnipeg.  I thought we played pretty well in moments, but we definitely had a lot of opportunities to improve throughout the match and we left a bit on the table tonight."

"For this team to be able to take the next step, it's about making sure we are executing the job we know how to do. We're going to have a bitter taste in our mouth for the rest of the night, and then we are going to wake up on Sunday and know we have Mount Royal on Friday."

Up next:
The Cascades head on the road to take on the Mount Royal Cougars next Friday and Saturday in Calgary. Both games can be seen live on Canada West TV.
