WVB: Attieh sisters combine for 34 kills in sweep of Cougars

Regina, SK – Gabrielle, Lauren, and Talia Attieh combined for 34 kills on the night, as the USPORTS No. 6 ranked UFV Cascades completed the weekend sweep (25-17, 25-20, 25-22) over the University of Regina Cougars on Saturday in Regina. The win sees UFV move to 11-3 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 0-14.

As it happened:
Both teams notched points early in the opening set, but with the score level at 12 Lauren and Gabrielle Attieh each found big kills to help the Cascades take a five-point lead. Blocks from Mo Likness and Gabrielle Attieh finished off the set 25-17 for UFV.

Lauren Attieh and Mo Likness took over early in the second set for UFV, combining for six of the Cascades' first nine points and giving their team a five-point advantage once again. The Cascades and Cougars traded blows for the remainder of the set, before a Talia Attieh kill closed it out 25-20.

The Cougars jumped out to a fast start in the third, grabbing a 3-0 lead after a kill from Jordy McEachern. However, The Cascades stormed back, getting a pair of kills from Talia Attieh and an ace from Natalie Crews in quick succession, and the teams found themselves level again at seven. Kills from Talia Attieh and Natalie Crews edged out a two-point UFV lead at 20-18 and they would not look back, closing out the match 25-22.

Top performers:
Gabrielle Attieh led all players with 14 kills, while Lauren and Talia Attieh each had 10. Setter Cailin Bitter had 26 assists on the night, and Canada West dig leader Emily Matsui posted 14 on the night.

Bailey Balaberda and Claire Sheppard each had seven kills on the night to lead TRU, while Devyn Grimsrud had six.

Quotable:
Cascades head coach Janelle Rozema

"Regina had a game plan and they were playing really well against us, but one of our goals was to work on our blocking coverage and I thought we did a really good job of covering our hitters and keeping those balls alive."

"We talked as a team about getting more points from the middle and the right side, so I'm happy we were scoring from that right side tonight. It just gives teams another side of the court to figure out, and Talia [Attieh] was really utilizing the volume she was getting."

"Next week against Winnipeg is going to have quite a different feel just because their lineup is quite a bit different this year. They don't make a lot of fancy plays, but they don't make a lot of mistakes."

Up next:
The Cascades now get set for a pair of playoff rematches next week with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen at the UFV Athletic Centre. Game times are set for 6 p.m. on Friday, and 5 p.m. on Saturday. Visit gocascades.ca/tickets or watch live on canadawest.tv.
