Abbotsford, BC – The UFV Cascades pushed late, but the Trinity Western Spartans held on for a 1-0 victory on Friday at Rotary Stadium in Abbotsford.
The win moves the Spartans to 6-4-2, while the loss drops the Cascades to 7-4-2.
How it happened:
UFV's
Kevin Mailand had the best chance of the opening half, as he found his way past a Trinity Western defender and unleashed a blistering shot, but it struck the shoulder of TWU goalkeeper Austin Petri and stayed out as they teams went into the halftime break scoreless.Â
TWU's Adam Hajdecki broke the deadlock in the 50
th minute. Despite suggestions of a foul on Cascades goalkeeper
Jackson Cowx in the lead up, hajdecki managed to force the ball in off a Charles Nana corner kick to make it 1-0.
The Cascades pressured late, having a pair of penalty shouts denied by the officials before Ebi Egali directed a header towards the goal in the 85
th minute. Despite UFV claims that the ball crossed the line, TWU's Mario Banovic was deemed to have cleared it away and the Spartans held on for the 1-0 victory.
Quotable:
UFV head coach Tom Lowndes
"I thought for only the second or third time this season we didn't take or chances. After halftime we came out a bit flat, and it's frustrating that the goal comes on what we think is a foul on our goalkeeper. At the end of the day the game has finished 1-0 on a goal that we aren't happy has been given, but we can't use that as an excuse."
"I thought we created some chances, one off the line, but I thought we could have been more clinical tonight. I thought the last 10 minutes we had a go, but we didn't get enough bodies in the box, and we didn't win enough second balls tonight."
Notable:
Friday was also the Cascades Hall of Fame induction night, as the UFV Cascades celebrated new inductees Jamie Vaughan, Bianca Wilkinson, and the 1993-94 women's soccer team.
