Langley, BC –
Kiana Langston scored a pair of goals in the first half for the UFV Cascades, but four second half goals gave the Trinity Western Spartans a 4-2 victory on Saturday in Langley.
The win moves the Spartans to 7-3-2, while the loss drops the Cascades to 2-8-2
How it happened:
The Cascades off to a terrific start, as
Kiana Langston fought off a defender before firing a shot from the top of the box off the right post and in to give UFV the lead in the third minute.
Langston struck again in the 38
th minute. After receiving a long pass from
Eesha Mudaliar, Langston turned and fired a left-footed shot into the right corner to put UFV up two at the half.
Emily Watchman responded for TWU in the 57
th minute, as she guided a header in to cut the lead to one.
Just eight minutes later a highly controversial hand ball was called on a defender in the Cascades box, resulting in a penalty kick for Trinity Western, and Mansha Sidhu made no mistake finishing it into the left corner to tie the game.
The goal from the penalty kick changed the game, as TWU continued to apply pressure and Kylie Hendricks scored in the 80
th minute to put the hosts up 3-2. Sidhu found an insurance marker in the 84
th minute to guarantee all three points for TWU on the night.
Quotable:
UFV head coach Ari Adams
"We came out tonight and had a great first half. Lots of energy from our young players, and two great finishes from Kiana [Langston]."
"We lost our momentum in the second half after Trinity was rewarded with the penalty kick, and after the poor call we were unable to regroup and get back on track. This is another hard lesson for our players, but it will make them stronger for next season as we continue to rebuild, improve, and develop."
Notable:
Langston's two goals puts her on five for the season to lead the Cascades. It also gives the second-year player a new career-high after scoring four in her rookie season.
Next Up:
The Cascades finish off the season at home next week. The team takes on UBC on Friday at 5:30pm, before closing out the campaign on Sunday against UNBC at 1pm.
