Hudson Brandsma picked up his first kills as a Cascade on Saturday, but the UFV Cascades fell in a three set decision to the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday, 22-25, 19-25, 23-25, at the UFV Athletic Centre.
With the win, the Wesmen move to 6-0, while the Cascades drop to 0-6.
How it happened:
The teams traded points through the majority of the opening set, but with the score at 19 apiece, UFV committed three straight attacking errors to give Winnipeg a lead. From there, a pair of kills from Jaxon Rose and another UFV error closed it out.
Winnipeg carried that momentum into a 13-10 lead in the second, as they cruised to the 25-19 set win.Â
The Cascades battled back to go up 19-16, boosted by the first three career Canada West kills from
Hudson Brandsma, but Winnipeg hit back to flip the score to 23-22 in their favour. After a
Jonas Van Huizen kill tied it up, a UFV error was followed by an Easton Dick kill to finish off the match, 25-23.
Notable:
Roan McCarthy led the Cascades with seven kills, while
Jonas Van Huizen and
Ryan Hampe had six and five respectively. Brandsma added six digs to his three kills in a strong night for the rookie.
Isaiah Olfert led the Wesmen with 15 kills in the game, while Luke Lodewyks added 12.
Quotable:
UFV Outside Hitter
Hudson Brandsma
"It was awesome, it was lots of fun," Brandsma noted on his first kill. "It was good to get it out of the way. I felt great, and being libero I was already warm and in the game, and used to the faster paced game. It didn't feel like a stretch. I just told myself I was going to go in and hit it."
"I think we just have to play our game a bit. We haven't really found all the parts of our game, and I think when we do we'llbe rolling. We just have to get that first win out of the way."
