MBB: Cascades push Vikes but nation's top team pulls away late

Abbotsford BC – The Cascades held off the number one team in the nation, but the Vikes pulled away in final quarter to take the game 100-75 Saturday afternoon at the UFV Athletic Centre.

The Cascades are now 3-4 while the Vikes move up to 7-0

How It Happened:
The Cascades got off to a good start as Jake Willemsen had two three pointers to help the Cascades go up by four points.   Holding onto the lead of 19-10 with just three minutes to go, Uyi Ologohola advanced the Cascades by three more points making it 23-10.  The Vikes scrambled to get back into the game, but the Cascades secured the first quarter 25-18.

In the second quarter, the Cascades battled for each point and kept the energy going offensively.  Arpan Singh checked into the game with an impact midway grabbing his own rebound for a lay-up, a free throw, and a three-point jump shot to bring the score to 37-28.  The Vikes then closed the score gap with a three-point jump shot from Griffin Arnatt and two three-point shots from Diego Mafia and the teams were tied 42-42 heading into the second half.

The score stayed even during the beginning of the third quarter both teams going back and forth.  By half way, the Vikes had pulled ahead by 10 points including three-point shots each from Ryan Gallager and Renoldo Robinson.  The Cascades fought back and narrowed the gap by five points 70-65 as Dario Lopez had a three-point shot right at the buzzer going into the final quarter.

The Vikes started off hot as Robinson two more three-point shots to start off the play.  UVIC then continued with a long run of points for the rest of the quarter having multiple shooters that couldn't miss to take the game 100-75.

Notable:
Arpan Singh and Jake Willemsen led the Cascades each with 11 points.  Ismael Hernandez was close behind with 10 points as well as having six rebounds.

Diego Maffia led the game with 20 points for the Vikes while Renoldo Robinson had 17 points including four three-point shots.

Quotable:
Head Coach Joe Enevoldson

"We've shown that we can play with anyone in the country, but we also showed that have a lot to work on and if we approach it the right way then we can grow from this past weekend."

"Similar to last night we're right there.  Last night it was a 31-9 third quarter, tonight it's a 30-10 fourth quarter.  Credit to them, they're the best team in the country and they've done this to everybody."
