Kelowna, BC – The USPORTS No. 2 ranked UFV Cascades finished off their weekend roadtrip to Kelowna with a three-set win over the UBC Okanagan Heat. The Cascades took the match with set score of 25-23, 25-17, and 25-14 to finish off their first semester of play.
The win sees the Cascades move to 9-1 in Canada West play this season, while the Heat drop to 3-5 this season.
How it Happened:
Both teams battled in the opening set, but the UFV offence proved to be the difference maker scoring 17 kills compared to 10 from UBCO as the visitors took it 25-23.
The Cascades continued to get better in each set as the match went on, as they committed just three errors in the second set and only one in the fourth, while hitting .324 and .435 respectively.
After UFV took control in the second set they would not look back, closing it out 25-17 before cruising to the 25-14 win in the third to close out the match.
Notable:
Emily Matsui led the way defensively for UFV with a match-high 10 digs, while Talia and
Lauren Attieh each posted 11 kills for the visitors. Setter
Cailin Bitter chipped in three kills and 23 assists.
Amaya Perry had 12 kills for UBCO, while Olivia Boulding added seven.
Quotable:
UFV head coach
Janelle Rozema
"Emily [Matsui was unreal on defense, receive, and covering our hitter today. Our out of system play was very solid as well. Very good out of system and attacking."
"We played a lot more consistently today. Yesterday we had some dips in our execution, but today we were pretty clean. Ending on a strong first semester has really motivated us to take advantage of all the things this break can offer us so we can come back healthier and stronger."
Up next:
The Cascades will now have to wait for their next Canada West action until they face the Calgary Dinos at home on January 17 and 18 in Abbotsford.
