WBB: Cascades get first win of the season over Vikes

Victoria, B.C – The UFV Cascades captured their first win of the season 57-52 after going bucket for bucket with the Vikes on the road on Saturday.

The Cascades move to 1-1 on the season with the win.

How It Happened:
A low scoring 1st quarter made it hard for both teams to create any significant score gap. Finishing at 15-14, there were a couple of good shots by Nikki Cabuco and Deanna Tuchscherer off the bench who each made a 3 pointer for the Cascades.

The play picked up in the second quarter with both teams grinding out each point. The Vikes pulled ahead by six points with three minutes to go boosted by Abigail Becker who snagged two offensive rebounds.  Late in the second, Maddy Gobeil came up with an offensive rebound and a layup tightening the score, before Julia Tuchscherer topped off the scoring to allow the Cascades to take back the lead 29-26 heading into the third.

The story remained the same for the third quarter with both teams battling back and forth leaving just a single point between them heading into the final frame.

With 4:23 remaining, Gobeil hit a three pointer to put the Cascades up by six.  Nearing the end, Deanna Tuchsherer was able to grab the last couple points that allowed the Cascades to break away and secure the game 57-52.

Notable:
Maddy Gobeil led the Cascades with 19 points and 11 rebounds in the contest, while Deanna Tuchscherer had 14 points and four boards.

Quotable:
UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer

"I wouldn't say it was a very well-played game from either side. A lot of missed shots and not pretty basketball, but I was happy we came out with the win. In Victoria that's always good because it isn't an easy place to play, and I thought we showed our experience a bit down the stretch so that was good."

"It was a disappointing home opener on Friday, but it just showed that we have a lot of work to do, and we can't take things for granted. Today it was good we had that grind it out mentality, so it was a positive step forward."

Up next:
The Cascades return home for a pair of games next weekend against the UBC Okanagan Heat. The games can be watched live at the UFV Athletic Centre, or online at canadadawest.tv.
