WBB: Tuchscherer and Gobeil strong offensively, as Cascades down Heat on Friday

Abbotsford B.C. – Maddy Gobeil's 10 first quarter points helped the Cascades into an early lead to come away with a 76-63 win over the UBC Okanagan Heat on Friday at the UFV Athletic Centre.

The Cascades are now 2-1 on the season while the Heat are 2-1.

How it Happened:
The Cascades came out on fire and held a substantial lead over the Heat throughout the first quarter. Maddy Gobeil has 10 points and 4 rebounds nearing the end of first quarter as the Cascades looked confident with a 13-point lead with 27 seconds to go.

In the second quarter, Cascades' Deanna Tuchscherer had two three pointers within 30 seconds of each other.  The Heat closed the score gap a bit as Lauren Foullong came up with a three-point shot however, Bernie Leda scores a late lay-up allowing the Cascades to the hold the lead 39-34.

The Heat battled to stay close behind in a low scoring third quarter.  Late in the quarter, an energetic Temi Aina checks into the game driving to the net for a lay-up making it even at 52-52 with 1:16 left.  With 24 seconds left, Tuchscherer gets one back from the Heat and Cascades lead again 54-52.

In the final quarter, the Cascades pull away early thanks to another three-point jump shot from Allison.  A steal from Nikki Cabuco for a lay-up stretched it to a ten-point game and the Cascades remained consistent to close out the game 76-63.

Notable:
Maddy Gobeil finished the game with 18 points and seven rebounds while Deanna Tuchscherer had 20 points including four three pointers.

Quotable:
UFV guard Maddy Gobeil

"First win at home this season, so it's nice to get that under our belt. UBCO is a tough team and they obviously give us a challenge, so it was nice to come out hot in that first quarter."

"We have a lot of maturity on our team this year. A lot of players that have been here for four or five or six years, so we were playing into that. Obviously UBCO went on a bit of a run but we stayed calm, stayed poised, and I think we really executed down the stretch and that allowed us to be successful."

Up Next:
The two teams meet up once again on Saturday afternoon at the UFV Athletic Centre to close out the weekend set. Tip-off is set for 3pm, and the game can also be seen live on Canada West TV.
