MBB: Cascades cap off 2024 with substantial win over the Heat

Kelowna BC – The Cascades shoot 44% from three to defeat the Heat 92-75 Saturday afternoon in Kelowna for final game in 2024.

How It Happened:
The Cascades went back and forth for the first few minutes of the first quarter.  UFV finally edged their way forward midway in the quarter going up by seven points with a three-point jump shot from Dario Lopez and an offensive rebound for two more points by Uyi Ologhola.  The Cascades then took a confident lead of 18-12 holding off the Heat from scoring for two minutes straight.  The heat tried to make their way back into the game however, the Cascades remained in charge as Clay Kurtz added three points and then closed out the first quarter with a jump shot to make it 25-18.

The Cascades quickly turned their points gap into double digits going up by 10 in the second quarter.  The Heat then took a turn and got the game back within four points as they had three back-to-back layups.  However, a jump shot from Lopez and a huge dunk from Ismael Hernandez put the Cascades back up by eight points 34-26.  The Cascades then built off that to go up by 14 points, their biggest lead of the game.  After the Heat took a couple points back by DJ Frye and Jalen Shirley, a Matthias Klim lay up at the buzzer allowed the Cascades to remain up by 14 points 46-32 at half-time.

The play continued the same as the Cascades continued to climb in points.  Each time the Heat tried to make up the distance the Cascades were right there to ensure their lead.  Nearing the final minutes of the quarter, Arpan Singh made a three-point jump shot to increase the score gap by 25 points and a pair of free throws from Dilveer Randhawa sent the Cascades ahead 76-56 heading into the final quarter.

The final quarter was nothing less of how the Cascades had been performing and they were not letting down.  The Cascades remained ahead by a substantial amount as each shot seemed to be another bucket throughout the entire fourth quarter.  In the end, the Cascades secured the game 92-75

Notable:
Dario Lopez came close to his career high with 33 points and nine rebounds for the Cascades.

Jalen Shirley led the Heat with 17 points.

Quotable:
Head Coach Joe Enevoldson

On a big win after a tough travel weekend:
"I said to the guys after the game, I thought that was our most complete team performance from top to bottom, and it's a great way to end the semester. We got great contributions from everyone that stepped on the floor, and you need those in this type of environment and in these types of adverse situations."

"Our shooting line was pretty nice tonight. We're capable of it, and we aren't going to shoot like that every night, but we got shots in rhythm, we took good shots, we got our feet set. Obviously from the free throw line we were 18 of 19. We shot 40 percent last night and we were 94.7 percent today. We do a good job of getting to the free throw line, we just have to make teams pay when they foul us."

On Lopez having another strong performance:
"Everyone knows he's our go to guy, but what he's shown is a tremendous growth in his consistency, and approach. In the last couple of years, he's been really good one night, and the next he might struggle. This semester he's really put back-to-backs together, so I think we've seen a huge jump in his maturation level, and you expect that from a guy who could potentially become your all-time leading scorer and rebounder."

What's Next:
The Cascades return in the New Year for a pair of home games January 10 at 8 p.m. versus the UNBC Timberwolves and January 11 at 5 p.m. versus TRU Wolfpack
