Abbotsford, BC – The UFV Cascades outscored their opponents in every quarter, as they claimed the 93-67 win over the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday night.
The Cascades improve to 8-11, and one step closer to clinching a playoff spot, while the Spartans fall to 4-15 on the season.
How it Happened
Triples from
Ismael Hernandez and
Daniel McCullough gave the Cascades a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter. UFV would stretch that lead to as many as 18 in the second, but late buckets from David Mutabazi and Marcus Shankar cut the deficit to just 12 at the half.
The teams traded buckets at the start of the third, but the Cascades caught fire from beyond the arc, hitting back-to-back-to-back threes from
Dylan Kinley, Hernandez, and
Jake Willemsen to lead 75-50 after three quarters. UFV would not look back from there, cruising to the victory.
Top Performers:
Dario Lopez led the Cascades with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while
Dylan Kinley finished the game with 20 points, seven boards, and six assists.
Ismael Hernandez also had a strong game, posting 14 points and five rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench.
David Mutabazi led the Spartans in scoring with 17 points and added nine rebounds. Marcus Shankar chipped in 12 points in the effort.
Quotable:
Cascades head coach
Joe Enevoldson
"It puts us one giant step closer to playoffs, and that was the goal coming into tonight. We have been playing pretty good basketball the last three weeks, and you have to peak in order to make a playoff push, and I think we are peaking at the right time."
"We knew that Dylan [Kinley] and Dario [Lopez] were going to probably lead us in scoring most nights, but we needed that third and fourth option, and the last three weeks we have had someone step up almost every night. Whether that has been Matthias [Klim], Ismael [Hernandez], or Hans [Befus[, we have had different guys step up and that just makes us pretty dangerous."
