MVB: Kastelein’s 14 kills powers Cascades to three-set win over UBCO

Kelowna, BC – Caleb Katelein collected a match-high 14 kills as the UFV Cascades took down the UBCO Heat in straight sets (25-20, 25-23, 25-23) on Saturday in Kelowna.

The Cascades win moves them to 7-15 on the year, while the Heat drop to 2-20.

How it Happened
The Cascades found four blocks in quick succession to take a 21-15 lead in the first, before Kastelein found his sixth kill of the set to secure it 25-20.

The Heat grabbed a 16-13 lead in the second, but UFV slowly chipped away in two-point chunks to tie it up at 23. A kill from Kastelein and a block from Eduardo Ferreira and Tyson Ardell put the Cascades up two sets to zero.

The teams were once again tied late in the third, but a Ryan Adams kill was followed up by a pair of errors, and the Cascades closed out the match.

Top Performers:
Caleb Kastelein had 14 kills to lead the Cascades, while Eduardo Ferreira added 10. Tyson Ardell finished with six blocks, and Jonas Van Huizen had a match-high 23 assists.

Quotable:
Cascades head coach Nathan Bennett

"I think Eddy [Ferreira] and Caleb [Kastelein] brought a lot of stability and some calmness in the back court tonight which was good, and we played with a different level of trust with individuals and the team. Overall, it was a great environment to be in."

"It shows their seniority. They can step into these moments and be able to understand that they can compete and play at a high level whenever they are called upon. The team needed them tonight, and they showed up."

"We are going to celebrate this one tonight, and get back to the drawing board on Monday to prepare for U of A."

Up next:
The Cascades return home to face the University of Alberta next weekend to close out the season on Friday and Saturday. Saturday's match will also be the team's annual senior night, where the Cascades will honour a number of graduating players.
