Calgary, AB –
Matthias Klim dominated on the glass, picking up 21 rebounds to set a new program single-game record, as the UFV Cascades took down the Mount Royal University Cougars 84-74 on Friday night.
Klim's 21 rebounds topped the previous high of 19 that was set by Jasper Moedt exactly 10 years and one day previous on February 1, 2014 against Brandon.
The Cascades third straight victory moves them to 7-10 on the season, and one step closer to clinching a Canada West playoff spot. Mount Royal meanwhile drops to 7-10, and in 11th place in the conference, just ahead of UFV based on RPI.
How it Happened
The Cascades held the Cougars to just four points on 1-for-21 shooting in the opening 10 minutes of the game, and UFV built a 10-point lead after the first quarter.
Both teams found the scoring touch in the second quarter, and Caden Kangas, Mawien Mawien and Sam Barnie all knocked down a three-point flush to help chip away at the UFV lead. MRU pulled within three points, before a
Daniel McCullough triple just before the half gave the Cascades a six-point cushion.
The dynamic combo of hard-nosed guard
Jake Willemsen and versatile forward Klim affirmed UFV's control of the game. Klim scored 13 second half points, and Fraser Valley floor general
Takeshi Croke guided his squad to a stable second half with impressive play on both sides of the ball.
Top performers:
Klim was the Cascades' standout performer, posting 21 points, 21 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Dario Lopez finished with 12 points and eight boards, while Croke and
Ismael Hernandez each had 10 points.
Holt Tomie led the Cougars with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Keivonte Watts scored 14.
Quotable:
Cascades head coach
Joe Enevoldson
"We started off slow offensively, but we were really good offensively. We just kind of controlled the tempo, controlled the pace, and controlled the game from start to finish. It was a good complete win for us on the road."
"Matthias [Klim] is playing with some great confidence since he was put into the starting lineup, and he's playing with more activity and playing a bit tougher. He rebounded the heck out of it tonight, but he's playing to his strengths and becoming a bit more multidimensional. I thought he took another step forward tonight."
"We had great performances across the board. Daniel McCollough, who hasn't played a lot this whole year comes on the floor and has eight points. We have different guys stepping up every night."
