MVB: Cascades settle for weekend split as WolfPack takes five-setter

Abbotsford, BC – After a five-set battle that saw the UFV Cascades come out victorious on Friday night, it was the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack that came away with the five-set win (25-18, 23-25, 27-29, 25-22, 15-13) on Saturday.

The WolfPack now move to 10-10 on the season, while the Cascades fall to 6-14 in the campaign.

How it Happened
UFV took a 5-2 lead in the first before TRU stormed back to grab an 18-11 lead and cruise to the opening set win.

The teams traded shots in the second, but it was a pair of kills from Ryan Adams and a block from Tyson Ardell that was the edge as the Cascades took set two.

The teams continued to trade blows throughout the third, but with the score level at 27 Adams found yet another kill and the Cascades forced the WolfPack into an error to claim the set.

Gavin Margerison found a kill and an ace late in the fourth to give TRU a lead, and a Sam Flowerday ace extended the match to a fifth frame.

Back-to-back blocks by Adams and Ardell gave UFV a 5-2 lead, but TRU stormed back with kills from Aiden Goetz and Flowerday to level the score. After a UFV service error, Goetz came up big for TRU, finding a block to end it 15-13.

Top Performers:
Jonas Van Huizen led the Cascades with 15 kills and 16 digs, while Ryan Adams had 13 kills. Tyson Ardell finished the match with a game-high nine blocks, and Silas Van Huizen chipped in 35 assists.

Sam Flowerday had 22 kills on the night for TRU, while Goetz had 10 kills and four blocks. Gavin Margerison finished with two aces and seven blocks.

Quotable:
Cascades head coach Nathan Bennett

"I still think we get a little tight when it comes down to the moment to preform, and I think we have to do a better job when that moment arrives. We are giving guys opportunities that maybe haven't had a lot of experience, and haven't seen these moments before, but at the end of the day we are still an experienced team overall and we need to be able to show up when it matters."

"We are still chasing down Calgary. Our goal is to jump one more place in the standings, and if we can do that it would be a nice finish to the year. Now we roll into Kelowna where we historically haven't had good results, so we get a chance to change that and come away with a couple W's."

Up next:
The Cascades head to Kelowna next week to take on the UBC Okanagan Heat on Friday and Saturday.  Both games can be seen live on canadawest.tv.
