Abbotsford, BC – For the second time in the weekend the UFV Cascades scored before the five minute mark, but the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns found a pair of goals in response to walk away with a 2-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Rotary Stadium.
The loss sees the Cascades drop to 4-2-2 on the season. Meanwhile, the Pronghorns pick up four points on the weekend with results against UBC and UFV to move to 2-2-3 on the year.
How it happened:
Kevin Mailand and
Mateo Brazinha linked up in the third minute of the game to give the Cascades the lead. Mailand blew past his defender on the left wing and, after cutting across the byline, he chipped the ball across to Brazinha who snuck it just across the line.
The Cascades looked to be in control for the majority of the first half, but Lethbridge found a response in the 41
st minute. Jeremy Dalla Costa got on the end of a long diagonal ball from Karim Bey, and after a quick cut inside Dalla Costa nestled it into the bottom left corner.
The Pronghorns found their chance to take the lead in the 78
th minute. After UFV cleared the ball to midfield, Lethbridge quickly attacked up the middle, and Cole Rosenlund laid the ball off to Simon Rolfson who hit it first time into the bottom corner of the goal.
Notable:
Brazinha's strike puts him on six goals and 10 points for the season to lead the league in both categories.
Mailand picked up his second assist, and his fourth point of the season in the match.
Quotable:
UFV head coach Tom Lowndes
"For most of the first half we controlled the game, and apart from the goal we really limited them. For whatever reason we came out in the second half with little to no energy, and got outworked. That's the beauty and the horror of Canada West. Anyone can be anyone, and full credit to Lethbridge, they wanted it more in the second half."
On scoring the opening goal once again:
"That's a real positive. If you look back in our history books, we haven't been that team the scores first. It's a pleasing aspect, but in that second half we didn't create enough. We stopped doing the things that make us successful. It could be a good learning lesson for us that we have to take everything seriously and go into every minute of every game with our best effort and we'll rebound against two tough teams next week."
Next Up:
The Cascades head on the road again next week with visits to MacEwan University on Saturday at 11am, and the University of Calgary on Sunday at 1:15pm. The games will also be streamed live on canadawest.tv.
