Victoria BC – After falling behind 1-0,
Emerson Toop looked to have secured the Cascades a point, but a late goal gave the host Victoria Vikes the win on Friday evening in Victoria.
The Cascades record drops to 2-5 with the result, while the Vikes improve to 4-1-3.
How it happened:
After a scoreless first half, the Vikes got on the board first in the 58th minute. Ruby Nicholas took the corner kick for the Vikes and curved it into the back of the net for the 1-0 Vikes lead.
The Cascades responded in the 72
nd minute. After
Keanna Bentley did well to keep possession and find
Jaya Bains, Toop was then played in on the left wing and deftly slipped the shot into the bottom right corner to tie the game.
In the 90th minute, Nicholas met the cross from Adrianna Hilton with her head, sending the ball past the UFV goalkeeper for the second time to put the Vikes ahead, 2-1, heading into stoppage time.
The Cascades were given a corner on their next possession following the Vikes goal.
Jasdeep Dhaliwal got on the end of it and sent a header toward goal, but Kayley Lidstone made a diving save to seal the win for the Vikes, 2-1.
Quotable:
UFV head coach Ari Adams
"Today was a tough loss. I think we deserved to walk away with a point but unfortunately poor defending on two set pieces put UVIC ahead of us."
"Lots of positive performances from our young players today and overall our backline was able to manage some talented Victoria attackers."
Notable:
UFV goalkeeper
Alana Madec made 5 saves in the game.
Toop's goal is her second of the season, while Bains picked up her second assist of the year.
