Victoria, BC –
Michael Beecroft scored early to give the UFV Cascades the lead, but a late tying goal from the Victoria Vikes meant that two of Canada West's undefeated teams would stay that way for another night.
With the result the Cascades and Vikes each move to 3-0-2 on the season.
How it happened:
It was a raucous atmosphere early on, but UFV's
Michael Beecroft quieted the crowd in the fifth minute.
Adam Szymanski got on the end of a corner kick and played it back across goal for Beecroft to nod home and give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Three-straight corners for the Vikes in the 18th and 19th minutes were all cleared by the Cascades, highlighted by a defensive save from
Anthony Vega who chested the ball down off the line.
Canada West leading goal scorer Matthew Pearse had a chance to equalize in the 31st minute but Cascades' keeper
Jackson Cowx got in front of it to make the save and keep his side in front.
The Cascades looked to increase their advantage just before the half, as the conference assist and points leader
Mateo Brazinha set up
Kevin Mailand in the box, but his shot was parried away by Victoria goalkeeper Callum Weir.
The Vikes finally found their equalizer in the 81
st minute, as a Javier Sagaste free kick skipped off the turf and found the back of the net.
Both teams had chances to win. It in the final moments, but the best came from Pearse in stoppage time. His quick shot from the middle of the box looked destined to find the back of the net but Cowx read it perfectly and made a terrific diving save to preserve the point for UFV.
Notable:
The Cascades have now scored first in all five of their matches this season.
The Cascades have allowed just three goals through their first five games this season.
Beecroft's goal was the third of his Canada West Career, and first of the season.
Szymanski's assist is the centre back's first career Canada West point.
Quotable:
UFV head coach Tom Lowndes
"It's a really good point away from home. We scored on a really good set piece, and it's settled us, but it's probably also made us drop a little bit deep too early. You can't defend a one goal lead for 87 minutes on a big pitch and an intimidating atmosphere, so at times I think we were a bit too deep, but I also think we defended fantastically."
"I thought [Szymanski] was great tonight. He won everything in the air, was composed, disciplined, and looked like a fifth-year veteran. He's turning into one of the top centre backs in Canada West. He's been great for us this year and I am excited to see him continue to develop."
Next Up:
The Cascades continue their road trip with a test on Saturday against the UBC Thunderbirds at 7pm in Vancouver. The game can be streamed live on Canada West TV.
