Abbotsford, BC  –
Jonas Van Huizen had 17 kills, and
Nimo Benne posted five aces, as the UFV Cascades closed out a weekend sweep with a five-set victory (19-25, 25-23, 14-25, 25-15, 15-8) over the University of Calgary Dinos on Saturday at the UFV Athletic Centre.
The Cascades win puts their record to 6-8 on the season to take sole control of eighth place in Canada West, while the Dinos drop to 5-9 on the season.Â
How it happened:
With the score level at 11 in the opening set, Calgary's Louis Kuntsmann scored six kills in the later portion of the set to give the Dinos a 1-0 lead.
The Cascades came storming back taking a 10-6 lead in the second, before back-to-back kills from Kuntsmann levelled it at 14.
Jonas Van Huizen answered back for UFV with consecutive kills, and kills from Benne and
Roan McCarthy closed out the set to tie the match up at one.
A 7-1 run by Calgary in the third gave them control of the set, and they extended the advantage to 20-10. The Cascades clawed back a four-point run with
Ryan Hampe picking up a block and a kill, but that was as close as they would get as Calgary secured the next five points and the set win.Â
The resilience from UFV was on full display in the fourth, as they bounced back to take a 17-12 lead on another Benne kill. Another Van Huizen kill, and a Benne ace closed out the set 25-15.
Benne scored three aces early in the final frame, as the Cascades took a 5-0 lead. A Hampe ace, and a Van Huizen kill set up
Tyson Ardell to deal the final blow and the Cascades finished off the match 15-8.
Notable:
The Cascades win marks their fourth consecutive victory, the program's longest win streak since joining Canada West.
Quotable:
UFV outside hitter Jonas Van Huizen
"It felt really good to just push back in the fourth, and then heading into the fifth hitting those aces and putting us ahead, it gave us that cushion and confidence – we felt very unstoppable at that point."
"In previous seasons when things weren't going right we would kind of crumble away , so we have been working a lot on our mental game this year. We want to have one island out there, not six individual islands."

The Cascades head out on the road next weekend for a pair of games against the Brandon Bobcats. Both games can be seen live on canadawest.tv. Â
