WBB: Gobeil scores 22 in win over Griffins

Maddy Gobeil scored 17 first half points on Saturday, as the UFV Cascades finished off a 66-39 win over the MacEwan Griffins at the UFV Athletic Centre.

With the win, the Cascades move to 11-5 on the season, while the Griffins fall to 0-14.

How it happened:
MacEwan jumped out to a fast start, going up 11-4 in the opening quarter, but the Cascades stormed back with a 10-0 run, thanks to nine straight points from Maddy Gobeil, to take a three-point lead going into the second.

The Cascades turned up the pressure in the second quarter, holding the Griffins to just eight points, and a seven-point UFV run leading into the half put the hosts up 38-21 at the break.

The Cascades continued their strong defence in the third, keeping the visitors to just six points in the third, while Bernie Leda and Deanna Tuchscherer each chipped in five points off the bench to help increase the lead to 26 going into the fourth.

MacEwan pushed hard in the final frame, getting 10 points from Unity Obasuyi, but the Cascades stayed the course to close it out 66-39.

Quotable:
UFV guard Google Sidhu

"Our preparation was big leading into the game, and we won by 40 points on Friday, but that doesn't impact how we are preparing for Saturday. It's just about what we need to do to perform and be at our best."

"We have four games left now, and we have to be ready to go right from the jump. It's always tough travelling to Prince George, but we have to get the job done."

Up Next:
The Cascades head on the road next week for a pair of matches against the UNBC Timberwolves on January 31, and February 1.
