Dario Lopez put up a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds, as the UFV Cascades came away with a 23-point win over the UNBC Timberwolves in a rare Friday afternoon matchup in Prince George.
With the win, the Cascades improve to 8-9 on the season, while the Timberwolves fall to 1-14 in the campaign.
How It Happened:
UNBC opened the game on a 6-0 run, but a pair of
Clay Kurtz steals helped the Cascades get their offence going and square it all up. The teams traded blows throughout the frame, including a highlight reel dunk from
Ismael Hernandez, but UNBC held a two-point lead after the first quarter.
The Cascades exploded for a 14-2 run at the start of the second, capped off by a
Jake Willemsen triple. Kurtz hit a pair of free throws and a lay-up at the end of the second to give UFV a 14-point lead at the break.
The Cascades improved their lead to 20 off a pair of
Matthias Klim jumpers halfway through the third, and a
Dario Lopez layup at the end of the quarter gave him 17 in the frame and made it a 21-point UFV advantage with 10 minutes remaining.
Arpan Singh nailed four consecutive triples for UFV in the fourth, as the Cascades stretched their lead to 30 and looked to put the game to bed. From there UNBC would go on a 9-2 run, but that was as close as they would get as UFV closed it out.
Notable:
Arpan Singh scored 14 points in just 10 minutes off the bench.
Dario Lopez led the way with 25 points and 12 rebounds, as the fourth-year continues to climb up the Cascades program record books – jumping into third in both categories.
Current Canada West assist leader
Takeshi Croke added five more to his tally and chipped in five steals as well.
Kurtz and Hernandez each notched 11 first half points each.
Quotable:
Cascades head coach
Joe Enevoldson
"It was a quick turnaround from our flight to today, so now it's a good opportunity for our guys to get some rest, get proper nutrition, watch some tape, watch the women's team hopefully get a win, and come out ready to play hard tomorrow," Enevoldson explained on the 31 hour break between game start times for his team this weekend.
"I thought today was a great team effort. Everyone that was on the floor contributed, and obviously [
Arpan Singh] steps on the floor and was automatic. Lopez scoring 17 in the third was big. I thought our transition was good, and I thought we ramped up the intensity level defensively and that was the difference."
