Kamloops, BC – With playoff positioning already sealed going in, a heavily rotated UFV Cascades lineup dropped a 4-1 decision to the TRU WolfPack on Sunday afternoon in Kamloops.
The result sees the Cascades finish the regular season with a 7-4-4 record, good for third in the pacific division and a quarterfinal rematch with the Calgary Dinos, while the WolfPack close out their year at 4-11-1.
How it Happened:
TRU was on the right side of a lucky bounce in the opening minutes, as a clearing attempt from
Dante Colebourne struck the knee of Lachlan Will before ricochetting 25 yards back and into the top of the Cascades goal.
TRU doubled the lead in the 36
th minute when Abdel Coulibaly's shot from outside the box managed to beat UFV goalkeeper
Lewis Hiebert, who was making his first start of the season.
The Cascades pulled one back in the 43
rd minute, when a Colebourne corner kick found the head of
Ebi Igali, and started an extended scramble inside the six-yard box.
Carson Muter eventually found a touch to get it back to Igali who forced it over the line to cut the deficit in half with his second goal of the season.
TRU once again wasted no time striking early in the half, as Matheus Lucas got his head to a corner kick from Ben Finley and snuck it in at the near post.
The WolfPack rounded out the scoring in the 65
th minute. Lucas got his head to a long free kick this time, knocking it back across goal, and a diving header from Will put it away to make it 4-1.
Quotable:
UFV head coach
Tom Lowndes
"We heavily rotated with the playoff situation the way that it is, and we handed some opportunities to younger guys. I actually think that despite the score, we've played well. You know, preventable goals, some bad individual mistakes on the goals that need to be better, but I thought we showed some real moments and glimpses of quality. We played a full-strength TRU team and got punished on some goals. So, I was really happy with some moments of the game, and stuff to build on. The main thing is just being healthy and being ready for a playoff game next week and seeing in that regards, it was mission accomplished."
Notable:
Hiebert,
Daniel Aniogbe,
Cadence Mullen, and
Lennart Moschke each made their first appearances of the year for UFV. It is also first career Canada West appearances for both Moschke and Mullen.
First-year attacker
Joaquim Dharamsi made his first start of the season, with the nation's joint top point getter and Canada West top goal scorer
Mateo Brazinha sitting out the match.
Up next:
The Cascades now turn their focus on to the Canada West quarterfinal, where they will take on the Calgary Dinos for the second straight year. The Cascades prevailed in a penalty shootout last season and will be hoping for a similar result when they meet next week at UBC.
