MSOC: Cascades comeback falls short in loss to Victoria

Abbotsford, BC – A late goal from Mateo Brazinha wasn't enough to complete a UFV Cascades comeback on Friday evening in Abbotsford, as the team fell 2-1 to the U SPORTS No. 8 ranked Victoria Vikes.

The Vikes improve to 9-1-2 with the win, while UFV drops to 6-2-2 on the season so far.

How it Happened:
Mathew Pearse opened the scoring for the Vikes in the 28th minute, as a ball into the box was headed back across from Archie Tugwell and Pearse would be in the right spot to finish it into the goal.

The Vikes would double their lead just after half time when a cross from Ole Cameron took a big deflection and found its way to Pearse in the  box, and the forward once again found the final touch into the UFV goal.

The Cascades clawed one back late in the second half when Carson Muter was deemed to have been fouled in the box, and Mateo Brazinha stepped up to score his conference leading 11th goal to cut the deficit in half in the 75th minute.

UFV pushed hard in the remaining 15 minutes, but after a Kevin Mailand shot struck the right post, and Bhagvir Sidhu saw a chance go just wide, the match came to a close with Victoria up 2-1.

Notable:
Brazinha has scored a conference leading 11 goals in nine games played, as he now leads the nation in goals, and sits in a tie for the most points in U SPORTS.

Quotable:
Cascades head coach Tom Lowndes

"I'm disappointed with the first 50 minutes. I thought we were second best all over, and full credit to Victoria they came in and were up for it. We switched off after half time and conceded a poor goal, and we could have hung our heads, but we slowly flowed our way back into the game and I think the last 40 minutes were more of what we expect from our group."

"It's always going to be hard to dig yourself out of it when you go down two, but I thought we showed tremendous determination to get back in and we are probably just a bounce or two away from tying it up. In the end, you need to be switched on for 90 minutes to get a result in Canada West, and we weren't tonight."

The Cascades are back in action on Sunday, as they host the UBC Thunderbirds at 1pm at Rotary Stadium in Abbotsford.
