Calgary, AB - The UFV Cascades men's basketball team came away with a nineteen-point victory on Saturday against the Calgary Dinos, 73-54. After falling 105-79 the previous night, UFV rebounded to get the weekend split.
The loss drops the Dinos to 4-2 on the year, while UFV improves to 3-4
How it Happened:
UFV came out flying on an 8-0 run to start the game, but the Dinos fought back to see the teams tied up at 17 early in the second quarter.
UFV found a 10-2 run in the middle of the frame, and an
Ismael Hernandez layup would put the Cascades up by 11 with 1:49 left in the half. A late flurry from Calgary cut the lead to just five at the break.Â
UFV continued their relentless play in the third, and timely buckets from
Jaylen Lee and
Hayden Sansalone reestablished the double-digit lead going into the fourth.
A pair of
Dilveer Randhawa triples would make the UFV lead 17 points in the fourth. The Dinos would cut it back to nine, but a
Bennett O'Connor bucket was followed up by a
Marcus Flores three to make it a 14-point advantage with under three to go. The Cascades weren't finished there, getting an
Ismael Hernandez dunk and a pair of threes from
Dilveer Randhawa down the stretch to close out the game 73-54.
Notable:
Hernandez scored a game-high 19 points to go with nine rebounds for UFV, while Flores chipped in 15 points, and O'Connor added 14 points and four assists.
Mrigendra Dhaliwal had a team-high 13 points for Calgary, while Dre Francis added 11 points.
Quotable:
Cascades forward
Ismael Hernandez
"We had to show what we were actually capable of doing, and it's a team that is going to be fighting to be in nationals, so we want to show we can compete and we are built for that."
"It all starts in practice. We practice like dogs, and we have to show it in game. Yesterday, we didn't do it as we usually do so we have to show what we can actually do. We will be way stronger when we have Clay [Kurtz] and Dario [Lopez]. They are big pieces of our team, and this season any team can beat anyone."
