18 points from
Marcus Flores helped the UFV Cascades earn a weekend split with an 86-79 win over the Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.
The win moves both teams to 1-3 on the season so far.
How it happened:
The teams traded buckets, finding themselves even at 17 after the first quarter, but a 17-4 run for TWU in the middle of the second put them in the driver's seat. However, eight points at the end of the first half from Flores cut the UFV deficit to just seven at the break.
The Cascades chipped away at the lead throughout the third, tying it up at 50 after a
Bennett O'Connor triple. Another O'Connor three gave UFV the lead before an
Amari Jones tip-in pushed the advantage to seven.
Vince Velasquez hit a field goal with 6:53 remaining to increase the Cascades lead to 13, and despite a late push from TWU the Cascades held on for the seven point win.
Notable:
Flores scored a team-leading 18 points to go with seven rebounds. O'Connor and
Ismael Hernandez each had 14 points in the game, and Jaylen lead added 10 off the bench.
Connor Platz and Marcus Shankar had 22 points each for TWU, while Platz added eight blocks.

The Cascades return home for a single game against the UBC Okanagan Heat on Friday, Nov. 7. Tip-off is set for 8pm, and the game can also be seen live on Canada West TV.
